The Open Air Market in Xanthi
Xanthi is a beautiful multicultural area and an interesting way to leave this fascinating culture is the flee market of Xanthi that is held every Saturday in the centre of the city! The history of the flee market and although has its routes back to the Ottoman period it remains almost the same! Slightly through the years the market as for some years was selling only fruits and vegetables and for some years used as livestock market. Also the market up to 1920 was held every Sunday in the central square of the city.
In the flee market visitors can find almost everything! From fruits and vegetables up to carpets, antiques, clothes, herbs and many more! Do not miss the chance, enjoy a coffee and mix with locals!
The central square
Enjoy a walk or even a coffee in one of the many coffee shops in the central square in the city of Xanthi. The square had first designed in 1870 and was completed in 1880. The main characteristic of the square is the huge clock that is a meeting point for the locals.
Folk museum of Xanthi
Originally the Folk Museum of Xanthi was founded by the Progressive Union of Xanthi and at the beginning of the 19th century was expanded at Kaloudi and Kougioumtzoglou Mansions.
The building of the Museum is a perfect representative sample of the architecture of the last period of the Turkish – after 1830.
Visitors of the museum except from the magnificent exhibits like silver buckles, textiles, jewelleries, traditional customs from Sarakatsanous, Thracian and Pontioi tribes, will have the chance to admire the magnificent murals of the Museum artworks of Vavarians and German artists.
